Rylen Yager Obituary, Death; – Fruitport schools have identified Rylen Yager, a 14-year-old student at Fruitport Middle School, as the individual who was tragically killed over the weekend.
The district has not disclosed the circumstances surrounding the teen’s death, but confirmed that an investigation is underway by the police.
According to Fruitport Township police, officers responded to a shooting incident that resulted in the death of a 14-year-old boy.
The incident occurred at approximately 7:20 p.m. on Saturday, January 24, in the 2900 block of Romedius Street, located south of East Broadway Avenue.
Due to a connection between the victim’s family and Fruitport Township, local police requested assistance from state police for the investigation.
Fruitport Township police arrived at the scene of the shooting and discovered the victim deceased.
The teen was an eighth-grade student at the middle school.
Superintendent Jason Kennedy expressed in a letter shared on Facebook, “Rylen’s presence brought light and joy to many.”
He continued, “Known for his radiant smile and delightful sense of humor, Rylen had a unique ability to make others feel welcomed and appreciated. With numerous friends and a heart of gold, he was kind, compassionate, and always eager to connect with those around him. Artistic and creative, as well as athletic, he exuded positive energy and a genuine love for life.
“Rylen made a significant impact on our school community, and he will be cherished and missed deeply.
The district’s Emotional Support Team convened on Sunday evening to formulate a plan for students returning to school, ensuring that counselors and social workers will be available to assist students and staff coping with the loss.
Students will be notified about the passing of their peer.
“On behalf of Fruitport Community Schools, I extend my heartfelt condolences to Rylen’s family, the staff who cared for him, and his loved ones,” Kennedy stated.
Police have indicated that the shooting is currently under investigation but have released limited information.
“This remains an active investigation,” state police confirmed.
