Jamal D Angelo Williams Obituary, Death; – Authorities have disclosed the identity of a man who was fatally shot by a Birmingham police officer in the Kingston community of the city late Friday night.
The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the individual on Monday as Jamal D’Angelo Williams, a 26-year-old resident of Pinson. The incident occurred just before 11:30 p.m. outside an apartment located in the 800 block of 45th Street within the Rev. Dr. Morrell Todd Homes public housing community.
Officer Truman Fitzgerald reported that South Precinct officers were sent to the 900 block of 46th Street North following a report of multiple gunshots detected by Shot Spotter.
Upon arrival, they discovered a group of individuals engaged in an argument in the 800 block of 45th Street North.
As officers approached the gathering, a member of the crowd alerted them that a man was armed with a firearm. The officer then encountered Williams, and during this interaction, the officer discharged his weapon, resulting in the shooting of the man, according to police reports.
Officers administered life-saving measures to Williams at the scene, and he was subsequently transported to UAB Hospital by Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel, where he was pronounced dead. Fitzgerald noted that a handgun was recovered at the scene.
The officer involved in the shooting was equipped with a body camera, which was activated during the incident.
Witnesses reported hearing an argument prior to the police’s arrival, followed by a single gunshot once the officers were on the scene.
Videos shared on social media depicted a chaotic and emotional situation.
The shooting on Friday night occurred one month after a woman was killed by Birmingham police on the city’s east side. In that incident, Chief Michael Pickett released body camera footage within just over 48 hours following the fatal shooting of 36-year-old Vanessa Ragland.
The footage revealed the officer responding to a 911 call regarding a domestic dispute at a Brunson Avenue residence, struggling on the floor of a bedroom with two women on top of him, before he fired three shots, resulting in Ragland’s death.
The video illustrated a chaotic struggle within the confined space of the small home, during which Ragland had taken control of the officer’s Taser stun gun.
The investigation into Friday night’s incident is ongoing.
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s State Bureau of Investigation is leading the probe, which is standard for most shootings by police. ALEA as of Monday had not made any statement about the investigation.
