Calvin Leon Costner Obituary, Death; – A tragic incident occurred late Monday night in Concord, resulting in the death of an innocent driver and the escape of a suspected drunk driver following a police chase, as reported by the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
The event transpired on George Liles Parkway and Interstate 85, with the chase commencing around 11 p.m.
A portion of George Liles Parkway, specifically between Exchange Street and Kannapolis Highway, remained closed until approximately 4:45 a.m. on Tuesday.
Troopers observed a speeding vehicle traveling at 111 mph on the interstate and initiated a traffic stop.
During the interaction with the driver, the trooper detected signs of impairment. Subsequently, the driver fled the scene, leading to a pursuit.
According to troopers, the suspect exited onto George Liles Boulevard, disregarded a red light, and collided with a Cadillac, which ignited upon impact.
The Cadillac’s driver, identified as 40-year-old Calvin Leon Costner, was extricated from the vehicle by responding officers but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
An officer involved in the rescue effort sustained minor burns; however, no additional injuries were reported.
The suspect fled on foot following the crash and remains at large. Authorities are urging anyone with information to reach out to the State Highway Patrol.
