Margarita Korolkevic Obituary, Death; – A woman who was fatally struck by a van on a major roadway had been consuming alcohol and suffered from a significant visual impairment, as revealed by a coroner.
Margarita Korolkevic, a resident of Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, was admitted to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in King’s Lynn last November after being discovered in Wisbech cemetery with her eyes “rolling backwards.”
The 49-year-old left the hospital prior to receiving treatment, and although the staff arranged a taxi for her, she subsequently walked into King’s Lynn and proceeded to the A47 near Saddlebow, where she met her demise.
Miss Korolkevic’s sister informed coroner Christopher Leach that her sister had been let down by care services; however, he determined that her death was the result of a road traffic accident.
Emergency services were summoned to the location just before 22:00 GMT on Sunday, 17 November 2024.
An inquest at Norfolk Coroner’s Court in Norwich included testimony from witness Gregory Driver, who reported seeing a woman waving her hands “in distress” in the central reservation.
He made a U-turn at the Pullover roundabout, but by the time he arrived, Miss Korolkevic had already been struck by a Renault Trafic van operated by Lee Seager-Jones, a delivery driver with 25 years of experience.
Mr. Seager-Jones stated that he suddenly noticed someone in the roadway, moving from right to left.
“I was unsure of what action to take,” he remarked. “I immediately applied the brakes. I could see her hitting the windscreen on the right side before disappearing from view.
“I contacted the police and expressed my belief that I had killed someone and required an ambulance.”
History of alcohol consumption
Miss Korolkevic was originally from Lithuania but had resided in the Wisbech area since approximately 2015.
She had a severe visual impairment that necessitated assistance when crossing streets, according to Claire Vile, a vision rehabilitation specialist.
Her general practitioner records indicated a history of mental health issues and alcohol consumption. The court was informed that she experienced periods of sobriety, but a toxicology report revealed that she was twice the legal limit for alcohol when she passed away.
Miss Korolkevic had reported experiencing domestic violence.
