Diondre Overton Obituary, Death; NC native, former Clemson wide receiver fatally shot at party; 1 charged

Diondre Overton Obituary, Death; – A suspect was apprehended on Tuesday in relation to the shooting death of a former football player from Greensboro, as reported by a news release from the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office.

Diondre Overton, aged 26, played as a wide receiver and cornerback at Page High School in Greensboro before continuing his education at Clemson University. During his collegiate career, he achieved seven touchdowns, accumulated 777 rushing yards, and made 52 receptions, averaging 14.9 yards per reception, according to ESPN.

On September 7, at approximately 2:30 a.m., deputies responded to a report of a loud party and noise disturbance in the 3200 block of Spring Mill Road. Upon arrival, they discovered that a shooting had occurred at the location, as stated in the news release.

Overton was identified as the victim of the shooting and was pronounced dead at the scene. Detectives from the GCSO Major Crimes Investigative Unit secured a warrant for 20-year-old Jeremiah Diago Blanks, charging him with felony first-degree murder.

Assistance from the U.S. Marshals Service was sought as detectives traveled to Michigan to execute the arrest. Blanks was taken into custody in Detroit and has been charged with felony first-degree murder by the GCSO. He is currently being held in the Oakland County Jail in Pontiac, Michigan, awaiting extradition.
