Derek Von Harris Jr Obituary, Death; – The individual who was fatally shot in the early hours of last week near an alley in Sacramento has been identified.
Derek Harris passed away on August 10 following the shooting that occurred around 2 a.m. in the vicinity of Blues Alley and 12th Street, as reported by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office.
Upon responding to a report of a person down in the roadway, officers discovered him with at least one gunshot wound, stated Officer Allison Smith, a spokeswoman for the Sacramento Police Department. Despite attempts to save his life, he was declared dead at the scene, according to law enforcement officials.
Court, jail, and public records reveal that the victim is Derek Von Harris Jr., aged 41, who had been sentenced on June 3 for felony arson.
On March 1, Harris set fire to a city-owned tent and his clothing around 9:15 p.m., which resulted in the burning of a gas line to a building located at 1515 North C St., according to Capt. Justin Sylvia, a spokesman for the Sacramento Fire Department.
“The reasons behind his actions remain unclear, but it seemed he was experiencing mental health challenges,” Sylvia communicated in a message to ABC10 on Monday.
Fire personnel reported that witnesses were interviewed and he was subsequently taken into custody. The investigation into Harris’ death is ongoing, and as of Tuesday afternoon, no arrests have been made, according to police reports.
