David R Bentley Obituary, Death; – A 22-year-old man received a 16-year prison sentence on Tuesday for fatally striking another individual with his vehicle in the Buckman area.
Shane McKeever, aged 22, was apprehended on February 25 after court records indicate that he deliberately drove his car into 48-year-old David R. Bentley at a speed of 40 to 50 miles per hour.
Bentley was transported to a hospital but succumbed to his injuries later on.
According to court documents, McKeever also collided with multiple tents and attempted to strike another individual at a homeless encampment located near Southeast Belmont Street and Southeast Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard before abandoning the vehicle.
Witnesses detained McKeever and restrained him until law enforcement arrived. Authorities reported that an individual had discharged a firearm at McKeever, but this person was never located. On June 9, McKeever entered a guilty plea for first-degree manslaughter and a no contest plea for attempted murder.
Alongside his 16-year prison term, McKeever has been mandated to pay $1,645 in restitution to the Crime Victims of the Department of Justice, which is a fund designated for victims of violent crimes.
