Joel Mercado Obituary, Death; – The bereaved family of a 16-year-old boy, who was tragically shot and killed at a back-to-school pool party in Covina over the weekend, is seeking answers.
The incident occurred shortly after 10 p.m. on Saturday in a residential area near East Camellia Drive and Peachtree Lane, as reported by the Covina Police Department.
A memorial for the deceased, identified by family members as Joel Mercado, continues to expand with additional candles and flowers as community members and loved ones grieve the loss of the teenager.
Mercado’s sister informed Eyewitness News that he attended the party with a friend, yet numerous questions remain unanswered.
“It’s just difficult because we are unaware of what transpired. We were not present. We did not have the opportunity to say our goodbyes, nor were we able to be with him at all. He was alone… and I believe that is what truly pains… all of us,” stated Adrena Nunez. “He had no family. We prioritize family. We have a large family, and he was simply all alone.”
Authorities have not disclosed any details regarding the events leading up to the shooting, a suspect, or any arrests made.
