Angel Montano Obituary, Death; – A former United States Marine, who was shot and killed by police officers in Richmond earlier this month, was armed with two knives and approached the officers, according to police statements made on Monday. The Richmond Police Department responded to the initial incident on Sunday, August 4, at 5 p.m.
A caller informed the police on Monday that his brother, Angel Montano, was behaving aggressively and was armed with a knife. The caller reported that Montano was threatening to kill him and their mother.
Officers arrived at the scene within minutes and remained outside, waiting for the arrival of less-than-lethal weapons and additional resources. Dispatchers stayed on the line with the caller, providing updates to the officers outside.
The caller informed dispatchers that Montano still intended to kill him. Police indicated that the situation escalated when Montano armed himself with a second knife.
Outside the residence, officers heard a “loud altercation” occurring inside, as reported by the police. Concerned that someone inside might be in danger, they advanced and discovered the door partially ajar.
The officers announced their presence and pushed the door open. Within moments, police reported that Montano emerged with two knives and approached the officers. Despite being ordered to stop, he exited the residence and continued to advance toward them.
At that point, police stated that officers Stocking and Remick discharged their weapons at the suspect. They attempted to render medical assistance, but Montano ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
A fundraiser organized by his family shortly after the shooting identified Montano, 27, as a former Marine reservist officer.
Officers Stocking and Remick have since been placed on administrative leave in accordance with department policy. The Richmond Police Department Investigations Bureau is conducting an investigation into the incident, alongside the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office.
