Schace Wayne Obituary, Death;- Authorities are currently conducting an investigation into a high-speed chase and hostage situation that culminated in an officer-involved shooting on Tuesday night in Haakon County.
As stated by South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley, the Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) is spearheading the inquiry, which originates from an incident that commenced with a weapons call on the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe reservation near the Green Grass Community.
Tribal law enforcement initiated a vehicle chase that subsequently left the reservation and proceeded into Haakon County. The driver, identified as 31-year-old Schace Wayne Looking Horse from Eagle Butte, allegedly discharged multiple rounds at the pursuing officers, causing damage to several law enforcement vehicles.
Authorities report that the situation escalated when Looking Horse took a hostage at gunpoint after his initial vehicle was rendered inoperable. He then commandeered another vehicle and continued his flight until the second vehicle was also brought to a halt.
At the end of the pursuit, Looking Horse was shot and killed by law enforcement. The hostage suffered minor injuries and received treatment at the scene. Fortunately, no officers were harmed.
The agencies involved in this incident included the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe, South Dakota Highway Patrol, South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks, the sheriff’s offices of Haakon, Jackson, Jones, and Stanley counties, as well as the Philip Police Department.
The DCI will be processing the scene, performing forensic analysis, reviewing body camera and dashcam footage, and interviewing those involved. The FBI and U.S. Marshals are providing assistance with the investigation.
This marks the sixth officer-involved shooting reported in South Dakota in 2025. A final report will be published once the investigation concludes.
