Dakota Hawver, a 26-year-old resident of Reno, succumbed to his injuries during the night, as announced by police on Thursday morning. He had been in critical condition since the incident at the Grand Sierra Resort.
According to authorities, two of the three victims of Monday’s shooting were in town from Southern California to attend a bachelor party, while the third victim was a 66-year-old local resident.
Investigators have not identified any links between Hawver, the casino, or the victims, as reported by police from the nearby town of Sparks, who are overseeing the investigation. The motive for the shooting remains unclear.
Two additional individuals injured in the shooting are still hospitalized but are anticipated to recover fully, according to police reports. Justin Aguila and Andrew Canepa, both 33 years old and hailing from Southern California, were shot from behind while they awaited a ride to the airport in the valet area, police stated.
Angel Martinez, a resident of Reno, was also shot and killed by the suspect while driving through the parking lot. Authorities indicated that the shooter had been concealed behind a parked vehicle.
Investigators have established that the suspect discharged approximately 80 rounds from a 9mm handgun, which he had legally acquired two years prior. Officials have confirmed that he has no criminal history and no known mental health issues.
The shooting incident occurred early on Monday when the gunman approached the valet area, brandished his weapon, and aimed it at a group of individuals, according to police accounts. Although his firearm initially malfunctioned, he quickly rectified the issue and began firing before fleeing through the parking lot, where he confronted an armed security guard from the casino.
The gunman opened fire on the guard, who returned fire as the shooter attempted to escape again before being shot by police and subsequently taken into custody.
The Grand Sierra Resort is recognized as one of Reno’s most significant venues, having hosted concerts, sporting events, and a campaign rally for the President.
