Douglas Smith Arrested;- A 50-year-old construction worker, employed on the roadside, was fatally struck by an intoxicated driver on Route 9 in Toms River early Thursday morning, according to authorities.

The individual was hit by a vehicle traveling northbound at approximately 1 a.m. near the intersection of Route 9 and Raymond Avenue, as reported by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office.

He succumbed to his injuries at a nearby hospital. The identity of the construction worker has not yet been disclosed by authorities.

Douglas Smith, a 51-year-old resident of Toms River, has been charged with driving under the influence and reckless driving after exhibiting signs of impairment, as stated by the prosecutor’s office.

Investigators conducted a blood draw from Smith at a local hospital. Further charges may be considered pending the outcomes of the tests.

Information regarding legal representation was not immediately available.
