Tony Demond Gill Obituary, Death;- A man has been arrested in connection to the fatal shooting of a high school basketball coach in Virginia on Sunday night. Pittsylvania County first responders were called at 9:20 p.m. on July 27 for a shooting at a convenience store on West Gretna Road in Gretna.
The Pittsylvania County Sheriff’s Office, Gretna police and Virginia State Police responded. Officers found Tony Demond Gill, 46, dead at the scene. James Richard Mattox, 52, was arrested for murder and use of a firearm in commission of a felony for the shooting.
Investigators say the two men did know each other, but the circumstances before the shooting were not initially detailed. Gill’s remains have been transported to the medical examiner’s office for a ruling on the cause and manner of death.
Gill was a special education teacher and head coach of the girls’ basketball team at Franklin County High School, the district said. “He was a mentor, role model, and friend to countless scholars, faculty members, and families within our school community,” Principal Reyhan Deskins said in a statement.
Mattox had his first appearance Monday morning at the Pittsylvania County General District Court. He is being held without bond. A bond hearing is scheduled in August, and a preliminary hearing date has been set in September.
