The LaMotte family is grieving the loss of their beloved member. He was set to celebrate his 15th birthday on August 5, 2025.
In a statement, they expressed that Michael was an “incredible boy who was taken from this world far too soon due to a senseless act of violence.” They also shared with KOAT that he had a passion for music and possessed a voice akin to that of an angel, along with a video showcasing LaMotte playing the violin.
“We are heartbroken to announce the tragic loss of Michael, a remarkable 14-year-old boy who was taken from this world far too soon due to a senseless act of violence. Michael was a cherished son, brother, and a true friend to many. His absence has created a void in the lives of all who knew and loved him,” stated the LaMotte Family.
“At some point, for reasons we are still investigating, the suspect began firing a weapon at the other individuals present in the room. The 14-year-old victim [Michael] was fatally shot and remained at that location where he was later discovered. The other individuals, including the shooter, fled the scene,” New Mexico State Police Chief Troy Weisler remarked during a press conference on Friday following the incident.
“There were individuals engaged in playing video games in a residence that belonged to a UNM student,” University of New Mexico Police Chief Joseph Silva stated during the same press conference.
