JMere Ridley Smith Obituary, Death; – Gates police have identified the individual who was fatally shot over the weekend at the Wegmans warehouse located on Brooks Avenue in Gates, New York, and have revealed that he was shot by a fellow employee of Wegmans.

J’Mere Ridley-Smith, 25, from Rochester, was shot and killed at approximately 4:15 p.m. on Saturday, July 26, while performing his duties at the Wegmans distribution center situated at 1500 Brooks Ave., as stated by Gates Police Chief Rob Long. Officers responded to reports of a shooting and discovered that Ridley-Smith had sustained multiple gunshot wounds while working inside the facility. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Chief Long indicated that Ridley-Smith was in the process of loading pallets within a cooler unit at the center when he was shot. Numerous 9mm shell casings were located at the scene, he noted. “It was a chaotic scene,” Long remarked during a news conference on July 28 at the Gates Police Department, emphasizing that many colleagues witnessed the tragic incident.

Wegmans spokeswoman Deana Percassi characterized Ridley-Smith as “a valued member of our team” and expressed that his passing “leaves a void in our hearts.” Suspect fled the scene, apprehended in Tennessee The alleged shooter, who is also a Wegmans employee, fled the vicinity prior to the arrival of law enforcement, according to Long.

Kyshonn Green, 32, from Gates, was taken into custody by the United States Marshals Service in Knoxville, Tennessee, without incident at approximately 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 27. He left New York state immediately following the shooting and was heading south, Long reported. His intended destination was not known at that time, he added. Marshals also seized a loaded 9mm handgun when they apprehended Green, he stated.

Green is anticipated to be extradited back to Gates for arraignment, according to Long. The timeline for this process is not currently available. Long mentioned that it remains unclear whether he will face charges of first-degree or second-degree murder in relation to his co-worker’s death. The specific charges will be determined after discussions between police and the Monroe County District Attorney’s Office regarding the case.

Authorities are continuing their investigation to ascertain the circumstances that led to the shooting and the sequence of events that transpired.
