Corey Newton Obituary, Death; – An off-duty firefighter from Tri-Town tragically lost his life in a fatal accident on Thursday night, as reported by the Oscoda County Sheriff’s Office.

According to the sheriff’s office, Oscoda County 911 received several reports regarding a collision involving an electric bike and a vehicle near M-33 and Pond Drive in Mio on Thursday, July 10 at 10:25 p.m.

Upon the arrival of deputies, along with county EMS and Tri-Town firefighters, lifesaving measures were initiated for the driver of the E-bike, identified as Corey Newton, who was an off-duty firefighter.

Investigators revealed that a 17-year-old driver from Fairview was heading northbound on M-33 in an SUV when Newton, also traveling northbound and riding his E-bike on the shoulder, unexpectedly veered into the roadway.

The sheriff’s office reported that Newton was transported to Grayling Munson Hospital and subsequently airlifted to a trauma center in Traverse City. He succumbed to his injuries the following day.

“Corey Newton was more than just a firefighter. He was a dedicated public servant, a teammate, a friend, and a cherished member of the Tri-Town Fire Department,” stated the sheriff’s office. “His selfless dedication and steadfast commitment to the safety and welfare of others will always be remembered.” The sheriff’s office further emphasized that Newton’s service and sacrifice will forever be honored and remembered.
