Alex Martinez-Sarmiento Obituary, Death; – The individual who was fatally shot by police in downtown Colorado Springs early Saturday morning has been identified by authorities as a 26-year-old male. Alex Martinez-Sarmiento was declared dead at the scene, as reported by the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office.

Law enforcement officers from the Colorado Springs Police Department responded to a report indicating that Martinez-Sarmiento had allegedly brandished a firearm near the closing time of several downtown nightclubs. According to police, they verified the man’s identity and confirmed that he may have possessed a firearm through surveillance footage around 1:45 a.m.

Officers arrived at the location in the 100 block of East Pikes Peak Avenue, close to Tejon Street, and attempted to engage with Martinez-Sarmiento, who, according to police, tried to flee while reaching for his waistband. One officer discharged their weapon, hitting him.

Martinez-Sarmiento received life-saving assistance from the officers but ultimately succumbed to his injuries. Police reported that a firearm was recovered at the scene.

The El Paso County Coroner’s Office is set to establish the official cause and manner of death at a later date.

No additional injuries resulting from the incident have been reported. The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on paid administrative leave, as stated in a news release from the Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday morning.

The office is overseeing the investigation into the officer-involved shooting, in accordance with Colorado state law.
