Vickram Roopnarine Obituary, Death; – The Fulton County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed the identity of the individual who drowned while attempting to assist another swimmer at Great Sacandaga Lake on Sunday. According to deputies, Vickram Roopnarine, aged 24, from Schenectady, was discovered on Monday morning.
Numerous rescue teams were dispatched to Great Sacandaga Lake near the Broadalbin Boat Launch on Sunday night following reports of a missing swimmer. Crews successfully recovered the body shortly after 10 a.m. on Monday.
Deputies reported that Roopnarine was trying to reach another swimmer near a water raft when he submerged and failed to resurface in the lake.
On Sunday, the Broadalbin-Kennyetto Fire Company along with rescue teams established staging areas at both the Broadalbin Boat Launch and the Sacandaga Boat Club. Divers located him off the Broadalbin Boat Launch on Monday morning.
Sheriff Rich Giardino expressed gratitude to the boaters who rescued the water raft and assisted the other swimmer in distress.
Additional responding teams included the Tri-County Swift Water Rescue Team, Edinburg Volunteer Fire Company, Northville Fire Department, and Mayfield Fire Department.
