Joshua Coffey Obituary, Death; Police have identified the man who was shot and killed by a deputy in Niles Township after he reportedly shot at the deputy first as 48-year-old Joshua Coffey of South Bend.

According to police, a deputy with the Berrien County Sheriff’s Office was approaching a parked vehicle on Third Street just south of Fort Street on Monday evening when Coffey got out of the vehicle and ran. While the deputy was chasing him, police say Coffey pulled out a gun and shot at the deputy.

The deputy reportedly returned fire and killed Coffey. The deputy has been put on administrative leave while Michigan State Police investigate this officer-involved shooting. It’s unclear at this time why the deputy approached the vehicle in the first place, or what happened to the driver who took off.
