David Tobias Tyler Obituary, Death; – The individual fatally shot during a confrontation with law enforcement has been identified as David Tobias Tyler, a 46-year-old resident of Scio. Authorities have alleged that Tyler aimed a firearm at members of the Linn County SWAT Team prior to his death.

At approximately 12:42 a.m. on September 14, the Linn County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report concerning a pedestrian who had been struck by a vehicle in a rural vicinity near Scio, as detailed in a news release issued by the agency on Monday.

Oregon State Police subsequently located the vehicle involved on Shimanek Bridge Drive, off Richardson Gap Road, where an armed individual was discovered in the driver’s seat. The specific make and model of the vehicle were not disclosed.

While officers were in communication with the suspect, later identified as Tyler, he reportedly discharged his weapon, although the release did not specify the type of firearm or the number of shots fired. It also did not clarify whether he aimed at the officers.

The Linn County Regional SWAT Team, along with the Crisis Negotiation Team, was deployed to the scene. Investigators attempted to engage Tyler via phone in hopes of achieving a peaceful resolution.

According to the release, “During the standoff with officers, the SWAT Team approached the suspect,” at which point he allegedly pointed a firearm at them and was subsequently shot. Tyler succumbed to his injuries at the scene, and no law enforcement personnel sustained injuries.

Benton County Sheriff’s Deputy Sgt. Daniel Ball, who has served with the agency for six years, was identified as the officer who shot Tyler. The release did not specify the number of shots fired or the type of firearm used.

The pedestrian involved in the initial incident was reportedly treated and later released from a hospital. The Linn County Regional SWAT Team is a collaborative unit comprising personnel from the Linn County Sheriff’s Office, Benton County Sheriff’s Office, Albany Police Department, and Sweet Home Police Department.
