Melissa Hortman Obituary, Death;- Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has stated that former state House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her spouse were victims of a politically motivated assassination. Additionally, a second lawmaker and his wife sustained injuries from gunfire.
“We must unite, both in Minnesota and throughout the nation, to oppose all manifestations of political violence,” Walz remarked during a press conference on Saturday. “Those who are accountable for this will face justice.”
The injured lawmaker has been identified as state Senator John Hoffman, a Democrat who was first elected in 2012. He operates Hoffman Strategic Advisors, a consulting firm, and has previously held the position of vice chair on the Anoka Hennepin School Board, which oversees the largest school district in Minnesota.
Hoffman is married and has one daughter. Hortman served as the leading House Democratic figure in the state Legislature and was a former House speaker, having been first elected in 2004. Both Hoffman and Hortman represented districts situated north of Minneapolis.
Drew Evans, the superintendent of the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, indicated that law enforcement is actively pursuing a suspect. Officials have reported that the suspect was disguised as a law enforcement officer.
Autopsies will be conducted to assess the extent of injuries; however, Evans confirmed that Hortman and her husband succumbed to gunshot wounds. Public Safety Commissioner Bob Johnson stated that the suspect was impersonating a law enforcement officer.
“The suspect took advantage of the trust associated with our uniforms, which symbolize honor and responsibility. This betrayal is profoundly unsettling for those of us who wear the badge with pride,” he expressed. The shootings occurred during a period when political leaders across the country have faced attacks, harassment, and intimidation amid significant political discord.
