Krystal Rivera Obituary, Death; – The City of Chicago is in a state of mourning following the heartbreaking loss of Officer Krystal Rivera, as family and colleagues reflect on her bravery and commitment. Officer Rivera, who had served only four years with the Chicago Police Department, was accidentally shot by another officer during an encounter in the South Side neighborhood of Chatham, as reported by CBS News. Rivera and her partner were in pursuit of a suspect when the incident took place.
During the attempted arrest on Thursday night, after the suspect had fled into an apartment, Rivera was confronted by an individual armed with a rifle. According to CPD Superintendent Larry Snelling, who was quoted in a statement obtained by CBS News, it was at this moment that “an officer discharged a weapon.” Rivera was unintentionally hit by her partner’s gunfire while they were in pursuit. Tragically, Rivera was also transported to the hospital in a vehicle that caught fire due to a mechanical failure and had to be transferred to another vehicle before arriving at the University of Chicago Medical Center, where she ultimately passed away.
According to WGN-TV, she was honored in a gathering at St. Sabina Church, where Rev. Michael Pfleger highlighted the collective nature of grief, stating, “It’s not about race or creed or neighborhood.” Furthermore, CPD Superintendent Larry Snelling characterized Officer Rivera as a model of the department’s values, admired for her “smart, assertive, tough, compassionate and professional” approach to law enforcement.
“The foundation has expressed that they are praying for Rivera’s family and have pledged to support her daughter in the days, weeks, and years ahead,” as reported by WGN-TV. Volunteers with Light the Line are demonstrating their support by adorning poles and trees with blue ribbons in memory of the officer.
