Richard Teegarden Obituary, Death; – The Hampton Police have confirmed the identity of the individual who lost his life due to a hit-and-run incident while attempting to cross Mercury Boulevard on Sunday evening, marking the fifth fatal incident on this road in 2025.

Richard Teegarden, a 52-year-old resident of Newport News, was discovered lying in the street at the intersection of West Mercury Boulevard and North Armistead Avenue at 10:48 p.m. He was in a designated crosswalk when he was struck by a vehicle that failed to stop, according to police reports. Teegarden was without identification, but detectives successfully identified him and informed his family of his passing on Tuesday.

No arrests have been made, and the Hampton Police have not provided a description of the vehicle involved in the incident. Police spokesman Shaun Stalnaker indicated that investigators have promising leads regarding the hit-and-run and have opted not to release the vehicle description at this time. According to data from the Virginia Department of Transportation, five out of the 11 fatal accidents in Hampton this year, which accounts for 45%, have taken place on Mercury Boulevard.
