Xavier Matthews,Karon Moore Obituary, Death; – A man from Maryland has been found guilty of two counts of first-degree murder in connection with a shooting that resulted in the deaths of two individuals in 2023. State’s Attorney Aisha Braveboy and her team announced the verdict against Christopher Jenkins on Monday.
Court records provide further insight into the events leading up to the fatal shooting during an attempted robbery at a Super 8 motel in Camp Springs. According to the Prince George’s County Police Department, officers responded to the motel located on Allentown Road at approximately 7 a.m. on June 28, 2023. Upon arrival, they discovered two men had been shot; one succumbed to his injuries at the scene, while the other was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later died.
The deceased have been identified as Xavier Matthews, 23, from Temple Hills, and Karon Moore, 26, from Washington, D.C. The following day, law enforcement announced the apprehension of two individuals linked to the shooting, including the woman who had rented the room where the incident occurred.
Keymonte Day, 24, from Washington, D.C., and Christopher Jamar Jenkins, 22, from Capitol Heights, face multiple charges, including first-degree murder for their alleged roles in the crime. Charging documents indicate that the management of the Super 8 confirmed Day rented the room where Matthews and Moore were fatally shot. During a search of the room, investigators uncovered firearms, cell phones, clothing, blood, and other pertinent evidence. Court documents assert that Matthews arrived with Day in his black Porsche SUV shortly before 5 a.m.
After Day booked the room, surveillance footage reportedly shows her placing a key card for their suite on the ground behind Matthews’s vehicle. Shortly before 6:15 a.m., a blue Infiniti sedan arrived at the motel, and a man retrieved the concealed key card. At 6:55 a.m., three suspects exited the Infiniti, approached the room armed and wearing masks to conceal their identities, and utilized the key card that Day is alleged to have hidden for them.
A short time later, Day is seen leaving the room and getting into the Infiniti. Soon, two of the three suspects leave as well and the SUV drives away.
On Monday, Braveboy thanked prosecutors for their hard work in securing a conviction, nearly two years after the crime occurred. “We are grateful that we were able to get justice for their families, but nothing will bring these two young men back,” Braveboy said.
In addition to two counts of murder, Jenkins was also convicted of conspiracy and firearms charges. Matthews’ grandmother, Ernestine Covington, spoke following the announcement of the verdict. She thanked everyone who helped get justice for her grandson. “He didn’t deserve what he got and I’m glad justice has been served for him,” she said. A sentencing hearing has not been set for Jenkins in this case.
