Eric Bechtolt Obituary, Death; – The Omaha Police Department has identified both the suspect injured by gunfire and the victim of the fatal shooting from the incident that occurred on Sunday at an apartment complex, which resulted in an officer discharging their service weapon.
Billy Dorrall, a 50-year-old man, was apprehended following the events at Florence Tower, situated near Browne Street and Florence Boulevard. Authorities reported that Eric Bechtolt, aged 45, was deceased prior to the officers’ arrival at the scene.
At approximately 6 p.m., police responded to several reports of an armed individual firing shots within Florence Tower. Investigators indicated that the suspect was located on the sixth floor and was armed with multiple firearms. Upon their arrival, officers could hear gunfire emanating from the residence. They accessed the sixth floor using both the elevator and the stairwell.
Upon entering via the stairwell, officers encountered Dorrall, leading to an exchange of gunfire. An officer discharged their service weapon towards Dorrall, who then retreated further into the sixth floor.
As officers proceeded into the hallway, they discovered Bechtolt, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Dorrall was located further down the hallway, armed with two handguns and suffering from a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.
Officers issued several verbal commands, to which Dorrall complied, resulting in his arrest without any further incidents. Investigators have stated that Dorrall shot and killed Bechtolt during a disturbance prior to the arrival of law enforcement.
Dorrall was transported to Nebraska Medicine for medical treatment and is facing multiple charges, including first-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder, attempted first-degree assault, three counts of using a weapon to commit a felony, and being a felon in possession of a firearm.
The incident is being investigated by the Omaha Police Department’s Officer-Involved Investigations Team, with assistance from the Nebraska State Patrol and the Sarpy County Sheriff’s Office.
Omaha police said portions of the incident were captured on the officers’ body cameras and the officers involved have been placed on leave. They will be interviewed this week and Omaha police said more information will be provided after the interviews.
