James Walter McGuire Obituary, Death; – An Indianapolis man was fatally shot over an alleged $40 debt owed to the individual now suspected of his murder on March 28. The suspect was subsequently shot by law enforcement.
Officers from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department’s Southeast District responded to reports of a shooting in the 1300 block of Riley Place around 3 p.m. Upon their arrival, they found an adult male outside with injuries indicative of a gunshot wound. The victim was later identified and rushed to a local hospital in critical condition.
Another victim was discovered in the front room and was pronounced dead at the scene. The deceased was identified as 48-year-old James Walter McGuire by the coroner’s office.
Witnesses at the scene, along with several individuals who called 911, provided officers with a description of the shooter and indicated the direction he was heading while wearing a gray sweatshirt.
The officers quickly located the suspect and instructed him to “show me your hands! Get your hands out of your pocket!” When the officer issued this command, the suspect reportedly raised his firearm towards the officer, prompting the officer to return fire. The suspect was subsequently taken to a nearby hospital in stable condition.
The suspect was identified as 50-year-old Michael Hendricks. A witness stated that McGuire allegedly owed Hendricks $40 and claimed that no other firearm was present at the shooting site.
Hendricks has since been arrested on charges of murder and attempted murder, with further charges pending. He has a prior conviction for rape, aggravated battery, and burglary dating back to May 1995.
