John Hughan Obituary, Death; – The individual operating the vehicle that collided with a boat trailer on August 30th, resulting in the death of a teenager and serious injuries to others, has been criminally charged. Following an investigation conducted by Yarmouth Police Detectives, Peter Richmond, an 81-year-old resident of Yarmouth Port, faces charges of Motor Vehicular Homicide due to Negligent Operation.
The teenager who tragically lost his life in this incident has been identified as 14-year-old John Hughan from Norwell. He was assisting his uncle with a boat trailer that had become immobilized due to a broken axle when the 2020 Cadillac Escalade, operated by Richmond, collided with the trailer from behind.
At approximately 1 p.m., Yarmouth Police received several 911 calls indicating that an individual was trapped between a boat and the vehicle towing it on North Main Street, just south of the intersection with Great Western Road. Officers promptly arrived at the scene, and Yarmouth Fire Department’s Heavy Rescue was summoned. A truck towing a boat trailer had pulled over to the side of the road due to a broken axle, and passengers had exited the vehicle to attempt repairs.
A Cadillac SUV traveling south on North Main Street then struck the boat trailer from behind, resulting in the trailer colliding with the individuals working on the damaged axle. As a consequence of the collision, Hughan was fatally injured, and two other individuals were transported to Cape Cod Hospital for treatment.
