Harold Chamberlain Obituary, Death;- A man from Virginia, who attempted to assist law enforcement in dispersing a confrontation, was fatally shot by an off-duty FBI agent, according to officials. The Stafford County Sheriff’s Office identified the individual as 61-year-old Harold Chamberlain in a news release dated March 7. Deputies reported that Chamberlain heard a dispute occurring on February 28 outside his residence in Fredericksburg and decided to intervene.
“This brave citizen rushed from his yard to the scene in an effort to assist,” the deputies stated in the release. “During the incident, the off-duty FBI agent discharged his weapon, striking the citizen in the chest.” Authorities indicated that the off-duty agent had initially confronted a reckless dirt bike operator, who subsequently fled the scene.
The operator later returned with family members and was intercepted by deputies. When the family members failed to comply with the deputies’ commands, a confrontation ensued involving both the deputies and the FBI agent. Chamberlain then emerged to support the officers and was shot by the agent, as reported by the deputies. He was transported to a hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
“We continue to keep his family and friends in our thoughts and prayers,” the deputies expressed. In an online obituary, Chamberlain’s loved ones characterized him as “hardworking” and “courageous.” “(Chamberlain) was always willing to lend a hand, whether it was repairing a fence, cutting down a tree, or fixing a child’s bicycle. He tragically lost his life while trying to help others,” the obituary stated. The investigation remains ongoing, and the name of the FBI agent has not been disclosed. Fredericksburg is located approximately 60 miles north of Richmond.
