Devin Shields Obituary, Death; – A man was fatally shot by law enforcement during a domestic disturbance, as reported by the Gary police department. Officers responded to a residence located in the 2300-block of Waverly Drive on Saturday at approximately 4:55 p.m.

According to police, a woman had contacted them following a dispute with her son. The family had a history of multiple police reports in 2024. Upon arrival, officers found the mother at the front door, who informed them that her son was inside the home armed with firearms.

Police observed the 23-year-old man holding a gun in each hand. Officers attempted to negotiate with him, urging him to lower the weapons. However, the suspect reportedly began to threaten both his mother and the police. In response, officers discharged their weapons, striking the suspect, who was subsequently transported to Methodist Northlake Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

The deceased was identified as Devin Shields from Gary, Indiana, by the medical examiner. The two officers involved in the incident have been placed on administrative leave. Gary Police Chief Derrick Cannon expressed his condolences, stating, “My thoughts are with the family and loved ones mourning the loss of this young man’s life. I urge the public to remain patient and considerate until all details are clarified.”
