William Gavigan Arrested; A driver has been charged with driving under the influence following a fatal accident on North Broadway that resulted in a man’s death early Wednesday morning, according to the Knoxville Police Department. Around midnight, officers responded to the 1700 block of North Broadway after receiving multiple 911 calls regarding a rollover accident.
Upon arrival, they discovered a black Jeep overturned and engulfed in flames. Preliminary investigations revealed that a Kia sedan was attempting to turn left into the Kenjo gas station when it collided with the Jeep. The passenger of the Jeep, a 22-year-old male, was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.
The Jeep’s driver, identified as 22-year-old William Gavigan from Knoxville, exhibited signs of intoxication, as reported by KPD. According to a general sessions docket, Gavigan informed officers that he was en route from his home in the Fort Sanders neighborhood to Taco Bell. He was subsequently transported to UT Medical Center for treatment and arrested for driving under the influence.
Additionally, he faces charges for violating registration and financial responsibility laws, as indicated in court records. The driver of the Kia, a 32-year-old male, opted not to seek medical attention at a local hospital. The investigation into the accident is being conducted by Knoxville Police’s crash reconstruction team.
