Tremayne Gross,Meghan Elizabeth Obituary, Death; – The Virginia State Police is currently conducting an investigation into a two-vehicle collision that occurred in the Capital Beltway (I-495) toll lanes near Dunn Loring, resulting in the deaths of two individuals yesterday (Sunday).
Units from the police and the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department (FCFRD) responded to the northbound I-495 Express Lanes at approximately 2:34 a.m., just south of Leesburg Pike (Route 7), following reports of a “crash with injury [and] vehicle on fire,” as indicated by scanner traffic.
As per the state police, the incident took place near the 48-mile marker, situated between the Route 7 and I-66 interchanges.
According to a press release issued today (Monday) by the VSP, “A 2017 Ford Edge was travelling southbound in the northbound lanes when it struck a 2004 Jeep Patriot head-on.”
Police report that both drivers succumbed to their injuries at the scene. The driver of the Ford has been identified as Tremayne Gross, a 24-year-old resident of D.C., while the driver of the Jeep was identified as 32-year-old Meghan Elizabeth Mathis from Westminister, Maryland.
Authorities have stated that both drivers were wearing seatbelts at the time of the incident, and there were no additional passengers in either vehicle.
The VSP has confirmed that “The crash remains under investigation.”
Preliminary data reported to the state indicates that there were 13 fatalities resulting from vehicle crashes in Fairfax County this year through April. Additionally, a teenage driver lost their life after colliding with a tree on Chapel Road in Clifton on May 8, which raises the total number of fatalities in 2025 to 16, including the deaths of Gross and Mathis.
