Timothy Echols Obituary, Death; – A man is currently incarcerated following an incident in which police report he fatally shot another man early Sunday morning in the Messick Buntyn neighborhood.
Tajee Turnage, aged 27, faces charges of first-degree murder.
At approximately 1:15 a.m., officers responded to a report of a shooting in the 3400 block of Southern Avenue. Upon arrival, they discovered a man at the scene suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
He was subsequently transported to Regional One Hospital in critical condition, where he later succumbed to his injuries. The Memphis Police have identified the victim as Timothy Echols .
Tajee Turnage was present at the scene when law enforcement arrived. He informed the police that he was employed as an armed security guard at an apartment complex when he received a FaceTime call from his roommate.
The roommate alleged that Echols had taken Turnage’s firearm from his bedroom and had discharged shots at her. Turnage recounted to the officers that he also overheard an argument between the roommate and Echols before witnessing Echols strike her in the face, followed by the sound of gunfire.
Police reported that the roommate stated she was attempting to leave the location when she became embroiled in a dispute with her boyfriend, Echols. She claimed that Echols fired several rounds from Turnage’s gun at her vehicle as she attempted to depart.
She indicated that she managed to drive to C.W. Davis Park, located near Prescott Street and Carnes Avenue, before her vehicle became inoperable. It was at this point that she contacted Turnage and requested him to come and pick her up.
Investigators noted that the roommate began walking along Carnes Avenue and utilized her phone to share her location with Turnage.
Turnage reported that he commenced driving to the location but stopped and exited his vehicle at the intersection of Southern Avenue and Prescott Street. He stated that he traversed the yards of two residences when he observed Echols exiting a parking space.
Echols was subsequently accused of crouching down and aiming a black handgun at Turnage.
