Thomas Hess,John Doe Obituary, Death;- A 52-year-old man from Allentown has succumbed to injuries sustained in a scooter accident on July 4, according to the Lehigh County Coroner’s Office.
The individual, referred to only as John Doe, was declared dead on Tuesday at 8:46 p.m. at Lehigh Valley Hospital–Cedar Crest. He sustained injuries around 5:30 p.m. on July 4 while riding a scooter on North 8th Street, just north of W. Chew Street in Allentown, when a vehicle struck him.
The coroner’s office reported that the man was thrown off the scooter onto the vehicle and subsequently onto the roadway. “John Doe has been tentatively identified; however, the Lehigh County Coroner’s Office and Forensics Center are actively working to find his next-of-kin and will not disclose his identity until the family and next-of-kin have been located and identified,” stated Coroner Dan Buglio. In addition to the coroner’s office, the Allentown Police Department and the Lehigh County District Attorney’s Office are conducting an investigation.
Second death on July 4
A different incident on July 4 in Upper Macungie Township also resulted in the death of a 76-year-old man.
Thomas Hess was riding a pedal-assist electric bicycle when he collided with a motor vehicle, as reported by the coroner’s office in a release on July 5. The incident occurred at approximately 11:15 a.m. near the intersection of Schantz Road and Cetronia Road.
Hess’s death was attributed to multiple blunt force traumas resulting from the crash. His death has been classified as an accident. This investigation involves the coroner’s office, the Upper Macungie Township Police Department, the Lehigh County Crash Team, and the Lehigh County District Attorney’s Office.
