Steven Gibbons Obituary, Death; – On Monday, the police identified a bicyclist who tragically lost his life on Saturday afternoon as severe thunderstorms impacted the region, while they continue to investigate the details surrounding his death.
The cyclist has been named as 67-year-old Steven Gibbons from Winsted, according to a news release from Winchester Police Chief Christopher C. Ciuci.
As of Monday, the precise circumstances of Gibbons’ death remain ambiguous. “We are attempting to ascertain whether it was related to the weather or if it was a hit and run,” Ciuci stated in an email.
Police responded to the scene located on the 100 block of North Main Street at 2:24 p.m., as reported by Ciuci. National Weather Service radar indicated that the onset of heavy rain and wind arrived shortly thereafter, within a minute or two.
Gibbons was discovered unresponsive on a busy roadway, as noted by Ciuci. Efforts to save his life were initiated, but he was pronounced dead shortly after at Winsted Health Center, he added.
Ciuci mentioned that no other vehicles were present at the scene of the incident, nor did any witnesses observe what transpired. “(L)ocating witnesses and any potential video footage of the incident is crucial to our investigation,” he wrote.
The police are urging anyone who was in the area during the incident or who may have seen or recorded any relevant details to reach out to Detective James Crean at 860-379-2721.
