Stephen Robert Geer Arrested; – A suspect has been identified in connection with a crash on Wednesday night that resulted in the death of a Golden police officer and injuries to another individual.

On Thursday morning, the Colorado State Patrol named the suspect as 43-year-old Stephen Robert Geer, who was taken into custody on Wednesday. Geer faces several charges, including:

– Vehicular homicide while operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or both, which directly caused the death of another person.
– Two counts of vehicular assault while driving under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or both, which also directly caused harm to another individual.
– Failure to exercise due care when approaching a stationary vehicle, leading to a fatality, in violation of the Move Over Law.
– Operating a vehicle while impaired by alcohol, drugs, or both.

During his arrest, Geer declined to submit to a blood or breath test but did participate in a roadside assessment. He appeared in court on Thursday morning, where his bond was established at $250,000 cash surety. Geer will be subject to pretrial supervision, including electronic monitoring and sobriety checks.

FOX31’s Courtney Fromm reported from the courtroom, where Geer’s attorney stated that this was his first arrest and attributed the crash to black ice, claiming Geer was unable to stop his vehicle in time.

The attorney further noted that Geer consumed only one 16-ounce beer at a brewery after work prior to driving. Additionally, the attorney mentioned that Geer is a PhD graduate of the Colorado School of Mines and is currently employed there.

In a statement received by FOX31, the Colorado School of Mines did not specifically name Geer but expressed condolences, stating, “one of our employees was involved in the fatal accident in Golden on November 6.” The letter continued, “The Mines community is deeply saddened by the tragic loss of a Golden police officer yesterday and the injuries sustained by a second officer while responding to a crash on Colorado 58.”

Geer is scheduled to appear in court on November 14 for formal charges. His arrest is linked to the incident that occurred in the eastbound lanes.
