SPORTS NEWS; – Former Chelsea and England midfielder Frank Lampard has been appointed as the head coach of Championship club Coventry City on a contract lasting two and a half years. At 46 years of age, Lampard assumes leadership of a team currently positioned 17th in the Championship standings, just two points clear of the relegation zone.
He succeeds Mark Robins, who was dismissed from his role after a seven-year tenure earlier this month. This marks the first managerial appointment made by Sky Blues owner Doug King since he took over the club in January 2023.
This role at Coventry represents Lampard’s fifth managerial position, following previous tenures at Derby County, Everton, and two separate periods with Chelsea. Since concluding his last assignment as interim manager at Stamford Bridge in May 2023, he has primarily engaged in media work.
Lampard’s inaugural match in charge of the Sky Blues is scheduled to take place at home against Cardiff City on Saturday. Coventry owner King expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “I am thrilled that Frank Lampard has agreed to join our club as head coach. Frank has experience in the Championship and understands what it takes to succeed in this league. His subsequent experiences at Chelsea and Everton will provide our talented squad with a clear perspective on what is required to excel at the highest level, which is our club’s aspiration.”
Lampard is the son of former West Ham United legend Frank senior, a two-time capped England left-back, and the nephew of another Hammers icon and former manager, Harry Redknapp. He made his Football League debut in October 1995 while on loan at Swansea City and played his first senior match for West Ham at the age of 17 against Coventry in January 1996. His career trajectory soared when he transferred from East London to Chelsea for £11 million in July 2001.
During his illustrious career, Lampard made 649 of his 904 total appearances for Chelsea, securing 11 major trophies over 13 years at Stamford Bridge and netting 211 goals, the highest in the club’s history. Following his time at Chelsea, he spent a season at Manchester City under Manuel Pellegrini and had one campaign in the United States with MLS team New York City.
