Simon Cuevas Obituary, Death; – An arrest has been made regarding the shooting death of a student from the San Antonio Independent School District that occurred in April, as per Bexar County records.
Fernando Flores, aged 18, faces charges of capital murder for the death of a person aged between 10 and 15 years.
San Antonio police officers discovered Simon Cuevas, aged 14, suffering from a gunshot wound to his abdomen at the intersection of South Elmendorf Street and Merida Street on April 16, according to an arrest affidavit. He was taken to the hospital, where he subsequently succumbed to his injuries.
Witnesses reported that several individuals assaulted Cuevas, with one of them brandishing a firearm and shooting the teenager, as stated in the affidavit. Surveillance footage indicated that the suspects were trailing him as he exited the school.
Following the assault on Cuevas, one of the assailants shot him, and the group then fled the scene, according to the affidavit. Law enforcement indicated that the suspects collaborated to orchestrate the attack on Cuevas and were involved in the assault that ultimately resulted in his fatal shooting.
The mother of one of the suspects was captured on surveillance video driving the group. After being questioned by the police, she claimed to have dropped them off at one of their residences following the murder, as noted in the affidavit.
The mother was able to identify one of the suspects from a photo lineup. Additionally, a staff member from the school recognized another suspect from the surveillance footage.
Following the release of a Crime Stoppers bulletin, numerous tips were received, which facilitated the identification of two suspects observed in the SAPD property room.
Subsequently, two individuals approached the police and informed them that one of the suspects, Flores, had confessed to shooting Cuevas. Authorities located a brown hoodie that corresponded with what Flores was wearing on the day of the incident, according to the affidavit.
Several anonymous tips also implicated Flores as the shooter. He was apprehended on Thursday, according to county records.
One of the suspects who instigated the attack on Cuevas has yet to be positively identified, as stated in the affidavit.
