Shayla Curts Obituary, Death; – A judge in Jackson County sentenced a man from Kansas City to 40 years in prison on Tuesday for the fatal shooting of a woman and her unborn child.
Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker reported that 35-year-old Emmett C. Williams received a 40-year federal prison sentence after entering a guilty plea in June to two counts of second-degree murder and two counts of armed criminal action.
According to court documents, Williams admitted to police that he shot 22-year-old Shayla Curts in the head inside a home located in the 4900 block of Bellefontaine Avenue. The incident occurred on December 6, 2022, leading to the deaths of both Curts and her unborn child. Williams stated that Curts frequently provoked him verbally, which he typically disregarded; however, during this particular incident, he used a 9mm handgun to shoot her as he passed by her while she was seated on the couch.
On Tuesday, Williams was sentenced to 25 years for the murder charges and an additional 15 years for the armed criminal action charges.
