Sgt Shiou Deng Obituary, Death; – Two individuals lost their lives, including a veteran sergeant of the Los Angeles police department, on the 405 Freeway, leading to the closure of all southbound lanes early on Monday morning.
A collision was reported in the southbound lanes at approximately 2 a.m., as stated by the California Highway Patrol.
The helicopter from ABC Los Angeles affiliate KABC was overhead, capturing images of a marked LAPD vehicle that exhibited damage to the driver’s side door. Numerous other damaged vehicles were observed scattered across the freeway lanes.
One individual was pronounced dead at the scene. During a press conference several hours post-incident, Chief Jim McDonnell confirmed that Sgt. Shiou Deng also succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. He had served 26 years with the LAPD.
McDonnell indicated that the sergeant was fatally struck after exiting his vehicle to provide assistance at the site of a car accident. A third individual was transported to the hospital, but information regarding their condition remains unavailable.
In a post on social media, Mayor Karen Bass expressed her condolences to the family of the sergeant. All northbound lanes of the freeway were temporarily closed for the investigation but have since been reopened. Authorities announced that the southbound lanes will remain closed until further notice.
