Sean Hayes Obituary, Death; – A bicyclist towing a trailer in Vermont tragically lost his life after being struck by a police vehicle, according to state police.
The incident occurred shortly before 3 a.m. on Monday along U.S. Highway 7 in South Burlington. The officer involved, a sergeant from the Shelburne Police Department, was traveling southbound when he collided with the bicyclist, who was also heading in the same direction. At the time, conditions were rainy and dark, resulting in a wet roadway, as reported by state police in a news release.
The deceased bicyclist has been identified as Sean Hayes, 38, from Burlington. The sergeant involved in the incident is identified as Kyle Kapitanski, 41.
An investigation is currently being conducted by the state police crash reconstruction team and its criminal division. They are urging any witnesses to come forward. When reached by phone on Tuesday, Kapitanski chose not to provide any comments. A message has been sent to the Shelburne Police Department regarding his current employment status.
Kapitanski, who became a member of the department in 2022, has previously held positions in various police and sheriff’s departments across Vermont. Most recently, he served as the police chief in Richmond.
