Ryland Calvert Obituary, Death; – A 17-year-old who has been indicted for the murder of a 13-year-old in Florence has had his request for youthful offender status denied.
In July 2025, Cameron Phinizee was indicted for the shooting death of 13-year-old Ryland Calvert.
Calvert was fatally shot during what investigators describe as a robbery in March 2025.
Investigators believe that Phinizee and Calvert were in the process of attempting to rob a man at an apartment complex when the shooting occurred.
Authorities state that the shooter, who has yet to be identified, arrested, or charged, was acting in self-defense.
A grand jury has established probable cause to conclude that Phinizee is legally accountable for Calvert’s death.
Phinizee has been indicted on charges of Felony Murder. He was released on bond under the condition that he wear a GPS ankle monitor.
On August 1, Phinizee submitted an application for youthful offender status, given that he was 17 years old at the time of the shooting.
In September, a judge rejected the application, indicating that Phinizee will be tried as an adult.
Currently, the date for his next court appearance has not yet been set.
