A suspect was shot and killed by law enforcement in Spokane Valley on Sunday after allegedly fleeing from police, firing at them from his vehicle, and killing an individual in Idaho during a violent crime spree.
According to Spokane County Sheriff John Nowels and Kootenai County Sheriff Bob Norris, the incident commenced around 8:30 a.m. on Sunday when a suspect carjacked a father and daughter in the 16000 block of East Sprague Avenue in Spokane Valley, close to the Whistle Stop Coffee Shop. The suspect then fled eastward towards the Idaho state line, reportedly reaching speeds exceeding 140 mph. Deputies indicated that they lost sight of the suspect near the Washington-Idaho border.
Kootenai County deputies reported that at approximately 8:38 a.m., the suspect deliberately struck a motorcyclist in the State Line Village area. The suspect entered the Stop-N-Go parking lot, attempted to carjack several vehicles, and successfully commandeered one. When a bystander attempted to assist one of the carjacking victims, the suspect allegedly brandished an AR-15-style rifle and fatally shot the man who was trying to help.
The suspect then fled westbound on I-90 back towards Spokane Valley. Deputies stated that he began firing at pursuing Washington State Patrol troopers and Spokane County deputies during the chase. Law enforcement deployed spike strips to disable the suspect’s vehicle.
The pursuit concluded at the intersection of East Trent Avenue and North Pines Road, where the suspect reportedly exited the vehicle armed. Deputies indicated that gunfire was exchanged, resulting in the suspect being shot. They attempted to provide aid, but the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.
Deputies noted that the suspect’s motive remains unclear and mentioned that he does not appear to have a significant criminal history.
