Rodney Mitchell III Obituary, Death; – Two individuals currently serving sentences in prison for separate offenses have been charged with murder in connection with an unresolved homicide investigation, as announced by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department on Tuesday.
Rodney Mitchell III was discovered shot and killed in the 700 block of West Southern Avenue on December 9, 2019.
IMPD Homicide detectives were summoned to the location to provide assistance, but the case was ultimately transferred to the Unsolved Homicides Unit in July 2024.
Following a more in-depth investigation, detectives pinpointed two suspects: Jonathan Hayes, aged 28, and Alexander Russell, aged 25.
The Marion County Superior Court has issued warrants for their apprehension; however, both individuals were already serving time for unrelated offenses. Russell is currently serving a 20-year sentence for attempted murder, while Hayes is incarcerated for robbery and attempted robbery.
Both Russell and Hayes have been preliminarily charged with two counts of murder and one count of robbery resulting in serious bodily injury. The final decisions regarding charges will be made by the Marion County prosecutor.
