Robert McVay Obituary, Death; – Authorities have identified the individual who was shot and killed by police after he ran onto an Atlanta freeway wielding a knife as a 39-year-old man from Maryland. The incident occurred shortly after 1:00 a.m. on Thursday on Interstate 75, located south of downtown Atlanta. The Greyhound bus had stopped due to a stabbing incident involving another passenger. Upon the arrival of law enforcement, Robert McVay exited the bus and attempted to flee.
Officers made efforts to disarm McVay, employing stun guns and pepper spray during the pursuit. According to police, McVay disregarded the officers’ verbal commands and continued to evade capture, navigating through active traffic on the interstate.
Police Chief Darin Schierbaum stated during a briefing on Thursday that McVay failed to comply with orders to drop his knife and instead “moved towards officers aggressively.” In response, five officers discharged their firearms, and McVay was subsequently pronounced dead at Grady Memorial Hospital.
The passenger who sustained stab wounds was able to continue his journey to Florida, suffering from injuries that were not life-threatening.
