Raymond Benedetti Obituary, Death; – The Indian River County Sheriff’s Office (IRCSO) has disclosed the identity of the individual who was shot and killed during a deputy-involved shooting on Wednesday night.

The deputies have identified the individual as Raymond Benedetti, 48, who investigators report has a background of mental health challenges and substance abuse issues.

“This is undoubtedly a tragic event, and our thoughts are with all those affected. Our deputies were compelled to make a split-second decision when faced with a threat. Our entire team performed commendably, and I take pride in the efforts they make to ensure the safety of our community every day,” stated Sheriff Eric Flowers.
IRCSO indicated that their forensic team is currently analyzing the body-worn and dash camera footage, with expectations for the video to be released shortly.

On Wednesday night, Benedetti’s mother reported her vehicle as stolen after he had taken it to procure an illegal narcotic intended to assist individuals withdrawing from drug addiction.

Deputies located the vehicle and initiated a traffic stop, where they encountered Benedetti and a passenger. According to IRCSO, Benedetti was initially complying with the deputies’ orders until he began reaching into his pockets and waistbands as if searching for a weapon.

The deputies issued multiple commands instructing the suspect to display his hands. Benedetti disregarded these commands and even attempted to charge at one of the deputies, resulting in the deputy-involved shooting.

The passenger in the vehicle with Benedetti did not fire any shots and was cooperating with law enforcement. Benedetti was transported to the hospital, where he was declared deceased, according to deputies. Further inquiries into Benedetti’s background revealed he had accumulated 23 felony arrests.

The two deputies involved in the shooting have both been placed on paid administrative leave. One deputy has been with the sheriff’s office since December 2024, but possesses six years of experience with another law enforcement agency. The other deputy has been with IRCSO since November 2021.
