Paula Shulfer,Dale Shulfer Obituary, Death; – A preliminary hearing is set for Tuesday afternoon concerning the 35-year-old man accused of shooting and killing his parents.

John Shulfer faces multiple felony charges, including two counts of first-degree intentional homicide, the use of a dangerous weapon, domestic abuse, two counts of inflicting mental harm on a child, and three counts of firearm possession by a felon.

The judge will determine whether there is sufficient evidence to proceed to trial.
Paula and Dale Shulfer were discovered deceased at their residence on July 6.
Their son, 35-year-old John Shulfer, has been charged with two counts of first-degree intentional homicide.
The District Attorney stated that the officer’s actions were justified to avert further harm.
On July 6, the Portage County Sheriff’s Office responded to a residence on Krogwold Road near Amherst Junction for a welfare check.

Upon arrival, they found a man’s body in the driveway, who had been shot and killed. The body of a woman was located in the garage, and she too had been shot and killed.

Officers were in the process of locating John Shulfer. Investigators also discovered that two children were present in the home.

A deputy, a 13-year veteran of the Sheriff’s Office, who had arrived as backup, circled the east side of the house. At that moment, authorities reported that he encountered an armed man wielding a pistol in each hand.

The deputy promptly issued a loud verbal command, “Sheriff’s Office, show me your hands!” The unidentified individual turned more towards the deputy. The deputy noticed the individual’s hand holding the pistol begin to rise. The hand holding the pistol was moving into a position from which it could be aimed and fired at another person. In response, the deputy discharged his rifle three times. The individual collapsed to the ground and stated, “I’m done, I’m done … I’m done, man. You got me.”

Additional law enforcement officers arrived at the scene of the shooting. The unidentified individual was later identified as John Shulfer. Two pistols were found near the location where he fell, approximately one to two feet away.

John Shulfer was transported to the hospital and received medical care for three gunshot wounds. He has since been discharged from the hospital and booked into the Waupaca County Jail.

Investigators interviewed Shulfer while he was still in the hospital. He admitted to shooting both victims. He also admitted to being in possession of a pistol when he was shot by police, according to a media release.

Portage County District Attorney Cass Counsin determined officers were justified in shooting a man believed to have shot and killed his parents.

“I have determined law enforcement’s use of deadly force was necessary to protect a third person or one’s self from imminent death or great bodily harm. All officer actions in this incident were objectively reasonable and justified under the totality of the circumstances and I clear them of any wrongdoing related to the use of force, Cousins stated in a news release.
