Paul Scott Wier,Debbie Evans Obituary, Death; – The Okeechobee County Sheriff’s Office disclosed on Wednesday the identity of the individual linked to a double shooting.
Paul Scott Wier, aged 51, from Okeechobee, is charged with the shooting and murder of a couple on their porch on Sunday, July 27. Family members informed WPBF 25 News that the victims were Purvin and Debbie Evans.
The victims were declared dead at the scene.
As per the sheriff’s office, deputies responded to several 911 calls reporting gunfire and a man dressed in black fleeing with a rifle through a residential neighborhood, specifically in the 2800 block of SE 47th Terrace.
Deputies promptly arrived at the location, identified the suspect, and issued multiple verbal commands for him to drop the weapon.
According to the sheriff’s office, Wier did not comply with the commands and began firing at the deputies. In response, deputies returned fire, injuring Wier. He was transported to HCA Lawnwood Medical Center in Fort Pierce, where he was pronounced dead.
The sheriff’s office stated that an investigation into the motive behind the incident is currently underway. Additionally, it was noted that Wier had been arrested in Palm Beach County in 2004 for aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and grand theft charges.
These charges led to an acquittal by reason of insanity. Before the 2004 incident, Wier had been convicted of heroin possession and had served time in prison. In accordance with standard protocol, the deputies involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave.
“This was a shocking and senseless act that has left families grieving and our community shaken,” stated Okeechobee County Sheriff Noel E. Stephen. “Our deputies responded with professionalism and courage under fire. We remain focused on supporting the victims’ families and bringing clarity to this investigation.
