Noelia Gomez Obituary, – The Newark Police Department has confirmed the identity of the pedestrian who was tragically killed by a motorcycle on Tuesday on West Main Street as 18-year-old Noelia Gomez, a freshman at the University of Delaware from Clark, New Jersey.

According to her LinkedIn profile, Gomez was pursuing a degree in accounting and business management at the University of Delaware. She was a graduate of Union Catholic High School in New Jersey. In a statement released Wednesday afternoon, the president and vice president of the University expressed the need for the community to come together in support.

“Events of this nature are profoundly tragic,” stated President Dennis Assanis and Vice President José-Luis Riera. “We cannot adequately convey our sorrow for the family, friends, and the wider community, as we are all profoundly affected by the unexpected loss of one of our own. Our hearts are heavy today.”

What transpired?

According to police reports, the motorcyclist was attempting to evade a traffic stop conducted by UD police on East Main Street shortly before midnight on Tuesday. The motorcyclist, whose identity remains undisclosed, allegedly ignored the police officer’s emergency lights and accelerated away at a high speed.

In the course of fleeing, the motorcyclist struck Gomez, who was crossing West Main Street, just west of North College Avenue. The impact resulted in the driver being ejected from the motorcycle, which subsequently collided with four additional pedestrians, inflicting non-life-threatening injuries.

The motorcyclist was transported to the hospital with injuries that are not life-threatening. As of Thursday afternoon, no charges have been filed in connection with the incident. The investigation is ongoing, and police are urging anyone with information to reach out to Master Cpl. W. Aston at (302) 366-7100 ext. 3414 or via email at waston@newark.de.us.
