Neil D Frye Obituary, Death; – The remains of a U.S. Navy sailor who lost his life during the Pearl Harbor attack in 1941 have been positively identified.
Mess Attendant 3rd Class Neil D. Frye, hailing from Vass, North Carolina, was killed when the USS West Virginia, his ship, was struck during the unexpected assault.
Although Frye’s remains were officially identified last September, his family has only recently received a comprehensive briefing regarding the identification process.
During the attack, the USS West Virginia suffered several torpedo strikes. The crew successfully prevented the ship from capsizing, allowing it to settle on the shallow floor of the harbor. Nevertheless, 106 crew members perished in the incident.
