Michael Rose Obituary, Death; – A man was fatally shot following an exchange of gunfire with law enforcement during an overnight standoff in Catawba County early Tuesday morning. According to the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office, authorities were first alerted to the residence on Rifle Range Road shortly before 8:45 p.m. on Monday.
Upon arrival, deputies encountered an armed individual, later identified as Michael Rose, who refused to engage in communication. However, they successfully assisted an elderly woman in safely leaving the premises.
As the standoff progressed, the county’s Special Tactics and Response (STAR) team, along with crisis intervention and de-escalation units, were summoned to facilitate communication with Rose. An involuntary commitment order was issued for him around 9:30 p.m.
The standoff extended for several hours until STAR Team members reported hearing what they believed to be a gunshot from within the residence. Subsequently, they observed smoke emanating from the house and entered to extract Rose.
Once inside, Rose allegedly fired upon the STAR Team members, who then returned fire, resulting in his death. The sheriff’s office has stated that the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) is conducting an investigation and that they are “fully cooperating” with the inquiry. Officials have not disclosed whether any law enforcement personnel sustained injuries.
